This next review is probably one of our best so far. We travelled to Blackburn to check out one of the up and coming driving schools in Blackburn called Sam’s Angels. Going by the name of the business, I couldn’t help but think of the 1980’s programme Charlie’s Angels but I suppose that’s just my crazy mind playing tricks with words.
I’m glad Sam agreed to meet me as I was already working in Blackburn interviewing another driving school there, I won’t mention any names as this is a direct competitor of Sam’s Angels driving school. The job I’d just finished, the driving instructor there claimed to be one of the best driving instructors in Blackburn, I was hoping that Sam wouldn’t claim the same!
So, as usual I met Sam who is the owner operator in a coffee shop, it was Starbucks this time instead of my usual Coast which I prefer. The amount of coffee I drink I could have bought a coffee shop. Sam walked in on time and my first impression was that she was looking professional and business like. I stood up and greeted her and ordered her a coffee. I then got my notebook and pencil out and started going through my list of usual questions.
I wanted to gather as much information about her driving school as possible and understand her business goals and her ideas for her business. We had a discussion about how she’s aspired to be a driving instructor in Blackburn and it was only 3 years ago that she turned this dream into a reality. She told me how hard her training to qualify as a driving instructor was and what the qualifications was which where set out by the DVSA – These guys are an agency who is employed by the government. I’ve popped a link above so you can have a look at the exam criteria to become a driving instructor.
Sam shown me some advertising material she uses coupled with photos of her car. I must say that I was impressed with the products she shown me, very professional. I could tell that she was a business woman and wanted to do things correctly and better than any of her competitors. Sam also told me that she started off teaching only females but she has now changed this to teaching both male and females. Ever since she’s put this into her business, she’s found that she’s busier than ever. I told her that’s probably because she’s now reaching out to a bigger audience and would therefore have a larger share of the market.
Due to the demand of her services, she’s recently gone ahead and taken on a franchisee. She said to me that this seemed the most natural choice as her dream is that within 5 years of starting her business she wants 5 cars on the road working for her. The demand is so high in her area for her services that she’s currently looking now to take on another franchisee. So, that will be 2 extra cars on the road and this has been done within one year of deciding to expand. This is pretty good going by my maths.
Although she is not restricting herself to just teaching females how to drive, she is adamant that she is employing female driving instructors in Blackburn only. She’s by no means against the male species but she want to have a USP for her business.
Another USP she has is that she can speak Urdu, Punjabi and Gujrati. Her area of business has a high population of young people from these backgrounds and being one of the only driving instructors who can speak three languages, well four really if you include English, she certainly has a wider market to choose from in comparison to someone who can only speak English.
This woman is smart, but does she hold the title as the best driving instructor in Blackburn, we’ll just have to wait and see I guess. I will be touching base with Sam’s Driving School in the future to see how much growth she’s managed to make with her business.
